In Indonesia, there are two techniques of drawing wax: a method of drawing patterns with a tool called “canting tulis”, and a large mold called “canting cap”. After drawing wax on the cloth, dye it and remove the wax.
The cloth called “kain sogan” is dyed with two dyes, indigo and soga. It is possible to express four colors: navy blue with indigo dye, brown with soga dye, white with no dye at all, and black with two overlapping colors. Soga dye is made by mixing various plants. Soga dyes and patterns are unique depending on the region and workshop
where the cloth is produced.
The traditional batik pattern consists of two elements: the outline as the main pattern and the detailed pattern
called “isen” that expresses the meaning of the main pattern and decorates it.
I designed a new geometric pattern by Adobe Illustrator (file No.531845396 on Adobe Stock). And I decorated it with “isen”. Then I actually drew wax on the silk with “canting tulis” and dyed it with natural dyes.
Decorative “ukel” (used to fill a space without gaps) mean sprouts. Bali dance also has this type. This part has a rule to fill in the space without drawing a sketch in advance. This work requires sensibility and skillful technique.
By decorating the inside of the magatama-shaped leaves with “ukel”, the energy of the vortex is amplified, and it is possible to express the powerful vitality of the plant.
It is possible to change the pattern except for the frame of the main pattern,
and the artist's sensibility can be demonstrated. The size is also arbitrary.
